Opposition
Opposition (from lat. Oppositio - resistance) in chess is a confrontation between kings. Distinguish the near opposition, when the distance between the kings is one field, and the distant, when the distance between them is 3 or 5 fields. Oppositions are possible vertically, horizontally and diagonally; in the latter case, it is called a “scythe”. Opposition is a special case of correspondence fields. It is a typical method of struggle for 3 key fields located side by side vertically or horizontally. Possession of the opposition allows the king to make a round.
