Practical recommendations

Grandmasters A. Belyavsky and A. Mikhalchishin in the book “Intuition” mention the ideas of the Soviet grandmaster Vladimir Makogonov (one of the first trainers of Garry Kasparov).  We are interested in the following “Makogonov’s principle”: in a balanced position, when both sides do not have direct threats and it is difficult to find a game plan, the player must determine his worst figure and transfer it to where it can be exchanged.  For example, Botvinnik noted that Robert Fisher always changed the opponent’s strong figure and never had his “bad” figures - he simply got rid of them. Information from the book "Workshop on Strategy" Berezin.
